About Nicola Barnes

From Service to Performance

My name is Nicola Barnes, founder of NKB Performance.

For over 30 years, I worked in high-pressure public service roles where performance mattered, resilience was essential, and the demands of the job often came before personal wellbeing.

I served in the British Army, including a six-month United Nations deployment to Bosnia, before leaving as a single parent and beginning a 25-year career with Lancashire Constabulary as a Police Officer and later a Detective Constable.

Throughout those years, I experienced first-hand the pressures that come with responsibility, uncertainty, trauma, and sustained stress. Following a significant health crisis and subsequent mental health challenges, I was medically retired from the police service.

That experience changed everything.

It forced me to reconsider what performance really means. Not pushing harder. Not doing more. But developing the ability to recover, adapt, regulate, and thrive under pressure.

The challenges I faced became the foundation of the work I do today.

The Performance-Wellbeing Connection

At NKB Performance, I help people improve how they think, move, breathe, and perform.

Whether you are an athlete striving for consistency, a business owner feeling overwhelmed, a professional navigating change, or someone wanting to feel more balanced and in control, my approach focuses on building sustainable performance from the inside out.

I believe that high performance and improved wellbeing are not separate goals.

When we learn to regulate our nervous system, improve self-awareness, develop psychological flexibility, and reconnect with our physical health, we create the conditions for lasting success.

My work combines evidence-based coaching, sport and performance psychology principles, breathwork, movement practices, and holistic wellbeing approaches to help people perform at their best without sacrificing their health in the process.

My Journey Into Movement and Mindset

I discovered yoga over 20 years ago after running-related injuries led me to search for a different way to move.

Initially, yoga improved my flexibility and reduced physical discomfort. Over time, I realised its greatest impact was on my mind.

The breathing techniques, mindfulness, and recovery practices helped me manage anxiety, improve focus, and perform more effectively during sporting events and everyday life.

As a keen cyclist, runner, and triathlete, I experienced the benefits personally and became passionate about helping others access the same tools.

In 2019, I completed my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training and have since undertaken extensive further training in Yoga for Athletes, Functional Anatomy, and Injury Management.

My training includes specialist education with Sarah Ramsden of Sports Yoga and The Body Athletic programme, focusing on supporting athletes and active individuals to move better, recover effectively, and perform consistently.

Coaching Human Performance

My curiosity about performance, behaviour change, and human potential led me to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice (Coaching and Mentoring) through Lancaster University.

Having left school many years earlier with only a handful of GCSEs, returning to higher education was both challenging and rewarding.

That experience reinforced a belief that growth is always possible, regardless of age, background, or previous circumstances.

To deepen my understanding of performance, I am currently studying for a BSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology.

This academic foundation allows me to integrate psychological theory, evidence-based practice, and practical coaching techniques into the work I deliver with individuals, teams, and organisations.

A Holistic Approach

Alongside coaching and movement-based practices, I remain passionate about the role holistic therapies can play in supporting wellbeing.

Reflexology continues to form an important part of my work, particularly in supporting women through fertility, perimenopause, and menopause transitions.

I have undertaken advanced training in Reproductive Reflexology, Pregnancy Reflexology, and Menopause Reflexology, and continue to support women navigating some of life’s most significant transitions.

However, these therapies are now part of a wider philosophy.

I believe people perform at their best when physical health, emotional wellbeing, mindset, recovery, and purpose are aligned.

How I Work

Everything I offer is built around three core pillars:

Mindset

Developing awareness, confidence, resilience, and psychological skills.

Breath

Improving nervous system regulation, focus, recovery, and stress management.

Movement

Creating strength, mobility, adaptability, and long-term wellbeing.

Whether through coaching, workshops, performance programmes, yoga, breathwork, or reflexology, my aim is always the same:

To help people build the capacity to perform well, recover effectively, and live with greater balance, clarity, and purpose.

My Mission

NKB Performance exists to help people navigate challenge, transition, and growth.

I work with athletes, professionals, business owners, and individuals who want to achieve more without losing themselves in the process.

Because true performance is not about constantly pushing harder.

It is about understanding yourself, managing your energy, developing resilience, and creating the conditions that allow you to thrive.

Pause. Breathe. Perform.

Nicola was introduced to my wife and I from a family friend and this was one of the best things to have happened.
My wife and I are on a journey in relation to pregnancy and following a baby loss early in the second trimester. We were open to trying any holistic therapies that would possibly help with our fertility. Following a consultation with Nicola we agreed a treatment plan and well what can I say! I have never been more relaxed, focused and whole body balanced.
And with regards to the fertility side, things are looking extremely positive for us and in some part I would definitely say the reflexology is responsible.
If you are looking for holistic therapy then I simply couldn't recommend anyone higher than I would Nicola.
Thank you for everything you have done so far!

Darren

I cannot recommend Nicola enough. I go for Reflexology and Reiki with her every month and I can honestly say she is the best person I have ever been too for either treatment. She makes you feel totally relaxed and I come out feeling 100% better each time. I cannot recommend her enough. Go to her and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Marilyn

I can honestly say Nicola does an amazing reflexology treatment. I have had regular treatments over the past few years and she is always very professional, in such a relaxing environment I always feel so chilled afterwards-highly recommended either as a regular session or a special treat.
As a result of having reflexology I also attend Nicola's regular yoga sessions which I have found hugely beneficial in my life for all my aches and pains and in my sporting hobbies. Nicola always makes you feel at ease and her humorous interactions relax everyone instantly.
Twice a week without fail for this ageing man.

I have a regular reflexology appointment with Nicola and it is no exaggeration to say it is definitely a necessity to keep me healthy and support my well-being. The treatments are amazing and I always feel so much better when I've been.
I can't recommend her highly enough.

Kerry

Nikki is really lovely and friendly. And the reflexology is relaxing and informative. Nikki really knows her stuff and I have learnt so much about my own body.
I would definitely recommend .

Emma

I highly recommend Nicola at NKB Holistic and Yoga. She is friendly, professional and I consider myself very lucky indeed to be able to experience her wonderful reflexology.

I have always been athletic, mainly a runner, but I have literally never spent any time stretching. Over the last 2 years I have started attending Nic's yoga class, which to my own amazement, I LOVE! I expected to feel silly and totally out of my depth, but in fact I have made progress that I can see and feel, in a safe and friendly group setting. Its now been 2 years and I cannot imagine not having my weekly yoga session. For anyone that hasn't tried yoga, is nervous about it or even just wants to do something with others in a safe environment, then I would totally say, "this is for you!

Fiona

Chair yoga has given me a new lease of life which I didn't have before. I have suffered several years with arthritis in my knees expecting to have replacements. now, because of your exercises and the support of my Physio, I no longer need to worry as the more exercise and balance I can get will improve my mobility.
You and your Chair Yoga have opened up a new dimension to my mobility. Well done. I would recommend it to anyone who has mobility problems.

Linda

I have practised yoga intermittently for twenty years in both the South and North West of England as as the South of France.

Nicola is definitely the best yoga teacher in my experience because she mixes a variety of breathing, asanas, stretching and relaxing together in a fun, friendly and happy atmosphere .

Added to that, her prices are the most reasonable in this area.

Give her a go!

Like most sixty year old men I have my share of aches and pains, in my case through old sports injuries and a life well lived. I thought that yoga might help me become more flexible but found the idea of attending a class daunting. I need not have worried, Nicola's classes are a great way to learn in a friendly environment. I've been attending them for two years now and the benefits, both physical and mental, are unbelievable. I love it!

Mr Malt Loaf

The highlight of my week is definitely attending the Monday night yoga class, everyone is friendly and welcoming. I feel so much better after I have been.
Nicola is a great teacher and makes the session light hearted too. Classes are mixed with yoga and some meditation at the end. Class size and venue is ideal and good value for money.
Looking forward to learning more.

Alex

Nicola is a fantastic yoga teacher. Classes are super friendly, and numbers are controlled so Nicola can really keep an eye on her students to make sure everyone moves into the postures safely.
I also love that she keeps it real and we often have a giggle! Its a really lovely environment for practising yoga and Nicola encourages everyone to do their best and push themselves but in a non competitive and safe way.
Highly recommend!
